e.l.f Cosmetics – Worth the hype?

Hey Guys,

Before I get into this post I want to clarify that I am in no way bashing this brand or saying they’re horrible etc. I thought I would start a small series on my blog where I talk to you all about different brands and what I think of them. These are my opinions and you don’t have to agree with them at all.
If you would like to know what I think of e.l.f Cosmetics, then please keep on reading. πŸ™‚

I want to start off with information about e.l.f Cosmetics:
Eyes Lips Face, also known as e.l.f. Cosmetics, is an international cosmetics brand based in New York City. Founded by Joseph Shamah and Scott Vincent Borba in 2004, it sells products largely at $1, $3, and $6 price points. Items include bath and skin-care products, mineral-based makeup, professional tools, eyeliners, lipstick, glosses, blushes, bronzers, brushes, and mascara, among others.

I do admit, I have only tried a few of their products such as their illuminating face primer, blusher, eyelashes, eyebrow kit and a few of their brushes. Down below I will do a little review of two of those items as they are the ones I currently have with me. I have linked all other products I have tried above.

Illuminating Face Primer: e.l.f actually don’t have any information on their site (well the Australian site) about this product which is quite disappointing. You also can’t buy this separately on their site, only in Kmart, which apparently their site doesn’t have it either? (what)
At first I really liked this product but after a certain amount of time I came to notice that when applying this product, a lot of yellow residue is left on your skin. I’m not sure if this meant to do that but I am not a fan. The texture is silky like which is okay but it makes my skin feel really oily. Overall, I am not a fan of this primer and won’t be repurchasing.

Blushe.l.f says:
The soft sheer texture blends into the skin for a silky finish. Designed to be worn alone or layered for more depth. Highlight your complexion with a subtle healthy glow!

I bought this blush because it reminds me of NARS blushes. I have seen other bloggers and YouTubers say that these blushes have a lot of sheer/shimmer so I had to test it out for myself and it’s true.
When I applied it to my cheeks, nothing came up. I tried to build it up by applying a lot more and still, nothing. I don’t really like much blush anyway but I do like it to show, ya know?
I will try again by taking the first layer off and see if it works (some products you need to do that) and I’ll see how it goes over another blush.
Overall, I am not a fan of these blushes, mainly because I don’t like shimmer in my blush/contour, I’m more a matte kind of gal so I won’t be repurchasing these.

However, I really did like their eyebrow kit. It went on so well, so easy to create a shape and the powder side is just phenomenal. I will definitely repurchase this.

In saying that, I have heard that e.l.f lipsticks and contour palette is amazing so I will purchase those and test them out. At this current time, I am not a huge fan of e.l.f and don’t think they’re worth the hype except for their eyebrow kit, but that’s just going off what I have tried. It might change once I try out their lipsticks or contour palette.

So that is it for this post, as I said at the start, I am in no way saying e.l.f cosmetics is horrible, I am just saying what I think of their products going off what I have tried. I know some of my friends absolutely love e.l.f and that’s okay. Everyone has different opinions. πŸ™‚

  1. ELF are one of those brands that are a hit or miss. I love the Mascara, for two dollars it works better than many others I’ve tried. Some of the $1 brushes are just OK, but I love the $6 kabuki brush! I also love the $2 eyelash curler. I love the lip stain but most of the other lip products are a bit of a miss for me. I’m really interested to hear what you think of the other products you try.

  2. I have several e.l.f. products that I really like. I have their illumintaing palette and it is really good. Their liquid eyelners are decent especially for the pirce. I really like their matte lip crayon type lippies.

    1. I’ll definitely give their illuminating palette a go and see if I like it, and I’ve been told their matte lip crayons are good so those are on my list to try. I hope I get on with them as I do want to like e.l.f cosmetics!

  3. With e.l.f. I notice that certain products are worth not splurging on more expensive brands (like their liquid eye liner pen, eyebrow pencils and some of their primers) but other things like some of their blushes and eyeshadows just don’t have the color payoff you’d hope for and don’t last very long. At least that’s what it’s been like in my experience!

    1. I personally don’t like the Primers, they feel exactly like the illuminating primer I mentioned which means it’ll make my skin feel really oily :/ so I’m not really keen on trying the rest out.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about their liquid liner so I might try that out! x

    1. Not many people do know what it stands for but yeah, eye, lips and face is e.l.f ☺️☺️
Maybe you will! I love the colours but they just don’t do it for me! If you do get one, definitely let me know how you get on with it! xx
